When Dementia Triggers Aggressive Behavior – 5 Tips from a Former Caregiver

Oct 11, 2023 / • Senior Care Tips

Many are aware that older adults with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia can be forgetful or struggle cognitively. But many may not be aware that the disease can also present in the form of verbal or physical outbursts. Such behavior is particularly common in the late afternoon and evening (“sundowning”).

As a Certified Nursing Assistant, I received specific training in both anticipating and redirecting such behaviors. Following training, I was able to put these strategies into practice and gain first-hand experience as a caregiver.

Here are 5 tips for handling the more challenging situations:

1. Manner

The way you engage with individuals with memory care needs greatly impacts their actions. Always speak to individuals in a calm tone with simple phrasing. Maintain eye contact.

2. Redirection

Take time to learn what the individual enjoys. In moments when distractions are needed, this can come in handy. This could include activities such as listening to music, playing a game, watching their favorite television show, or going on a walk.

3. Validation

When the individual may be having moments of forgetfulness, be careful not to argue or rush them. This might amplify their agitation. Instead, find a way to validate their confusion and emotions.

4. Stay calm

Do not take things personally. Individuals with memory care needs may use a harsh tone or become physical during periods of confusion. This is not a reflection of you or your efforts.

5. Education

Take a memory care training class to learn additional ways to handle combative or aggressive behavior with memory care individuals.

Incorporating these tips into your caregiving approach – whether you’re a family caregiver or a professional caregiver – can make a significant difference in creating a supportive environment in which individuals with dementia can thrive.
