I can remember it like it was yesterday when I received a call from my mom that she had fallen and had to call the paramedics to come and help her. Three weeks later she was diagnosed with a medical condition that would not allow her to live on her own anymore. This is when I knew, it was time to bring my mom to Texas from California to live with us.

For the next three years we took care of my mom. She was home by herself during the day while we were at work. Her physical health began to deteriorate even more, and it had become too risky to leave her alone. As we sought guidance on what to do next, the prevailing recommendation was to place her in a nursing home. This was a difficult decision to make but at the time, we knew this was the best option. She spent her last six years in the nursing home. Now, when I reflect and knowing what I know today I ask myself why I was not aware of these options for in-home care. Mom wanted to be home because it made her happier and we would have preferred this option.

My wife is now experiencing some similar challenges with her mother. Her and her sister are the caregivers, and they rotate caring for her. Ironically, while I was looking for different work opportunities that would be more fulfilling, I found Hallmark Homecare.
